Hi, and welcome to my personal website! My name is Joshua Hu, and I was born in New York City and am a sophomore studying Computer Engineering at Binghamton University.

I am really interested in the space where software and hardware meet. During the upcoming academic year, I will continue my research through the First-Year Research Immersion (FRI) program while beginning my journey with Binghamton Motorsports as a member of the low-voltage team.

Beyond coursework and research, I intend to continue building side projects, participating in hackathons, and pursuing opportunities that challenge me to keep learning. I plan to continue updating this website to document my growth, share what I create, and hold myself accountable to the goals I set.

Overview

I collaborate with a seven-person research team to develop a computer vision and machine learning system for 3D model analysis. I build and train custom convolutional neural networks while testing feature-extraction techniques to improve model accuracy. I also create system diagrams and technical visuals that communicate our workflow and findings for research presentations.

Overview

I worked on B-Ranked, a community-powered tier-list platform designed around life at Binghamton University. My contributions included the sign-up workflow, account authentication, the drag-and-drop tier-list builder, and the database relationships that connect users to their tier lists and comments.

Feature Highlights

B-Ranked lets students build campus-specific tier lists for dining halls, residence halls, study spaces, clubs, professors, and more. Users can add custom items and images, organize them through a responsive drag-and-drop interface, browse featured and community-created rankings, and participate through likes, comments, and replies. Secure accounts give users ownership of their published tier lists and comments while supporting editing, deletion, and validation that prevents duplicate accounts.

Fish Tank Transport Device

Overview

I contributed to S.A.L.T., a stabilized transport device designed to move fish tanks safely across indoor and outdoor environments. I focused on the all-terrain wheel and braking subsystem, as well as the thermal, light-blocking, and splash-protection layers that preserve stable conditions for aquatic life during transport.

Feature Highlights

The team designed a passive-first device that one adult could use to transport tanks from 2.5 to 10 gallons while limiting vibration, water agitation, temperature change, and environmental exposure. For mobility, I evaluated eight-inch pneumatic wheels to improve traction and absorb vibration over concrete, grass, gravel, and uneven terrain, paired with foot-actuated brakes that secure the device during loading and unloading. For aquatic protection, I helped specify a closed-cell neoprene shell and stretch sleeve that provide insulation, block external light, resist water and weather, and conform to different tank geometries.

Arduino Project: Maze Runner

Lead Software Developer

Overview

I led development of the Arduino/C++ codebase for an interactive maze game and contributed extensively to its physical build. I developed the game logic and LCD interface, then breadboarded, soldered, wired, debugged, and integrated the electronics into the finished castle enclosure for the Annual Watson Arduino Expo.

Feature Highlights

Maze Runner is a Shrek-themed embedded game in which players use four directional buttons to guide a character through a custom LCD maze and reach Fiona's castle. I programmed the complete experience, including movement and collision logic, custom LCD characters, a life system, timer, completion bar, wall-hit sound cues, restart controls, and distinct win and game-over screens. I also helped turn the software into a reliable physical product by testing the circuit on breadboards, diagnosing miswired controls, labeling and resoldering connections, and integrating the Arduino, 20x4 LCD, buttons, and speaker into the handmade enclosure.

Reverse Engineering: Peak Flow Meter

Overview

I reverse engineered a peak flow meter with a four-person team by disassembling the device and separating it into body, electrical, and power subassemblies. I focused on selecting individual parts from those subassemblies and accurately recreating the components in SOLIDWORKS for the final assembly.

Feature Highlights

The team reverse engineered an electronic peak flow meter by disassembling the device, identifying its components, and grouping them into body, electrical, and power subassemblies. My work centered on taking parts from across these different subassemblies, measuring and studying their geometry, and recreating the individual components in SOLIDWORKS. Those modeled parts were then brought together in the exploded assembly view to clearly show the device's internal construction and how each component fits into the overall product.

Overview

My primary work focused on studying and implementing a one-dimensional fluid model based on the Navier-Stokes equations in Python and designing a structural support system for a water channel in Fusion 360. I used numerical methods and plotted results to examine fluid behavior, then iterated on the CAD structure to create a stable, practical support for controlled-flow experiments.

Highlights

The internship combined computational fluid dynamics, mechanical design, and hands-on engineering exploration. I learned how fluid scenarios are defined through parameters, discretized equations, and boundary conditions. I then used NumPy and Matplotlib to calculate, visualize, and compare numerical behavior with expected physical trends. Alongside the simulation work, I developed a Fusion 360 support structure for an aluminum water channel through repeated design revisions, researched pump options based on efficiency and cost, and explored Arduino sensors through guided hardware exercises.

Emerging Leaders Program - Technology in Society

I designed and led two interactive activities that introduced AI literacy concepts across 13 high school classes. I helped translate technical ideas into approachable lessons, guided students through the activities, and worked with my team to co-manage a $200 program budget. At the conclusion of the program, I presented our outcomes at the annual symposium to peers, mentors, and program directors.

I coordinate the planning and execution of Mister and Miss Asia, a cultural showcase for more than 150 attendees. I manage the venue, catering, budget, rehearsals, and day-of logistics while coordinating publicity, fundraising, media, and treasury tasks across the executive board. I also guide contestants through weekly practices, provide performance feedback, and organize promotional content and outreach with other student organizations.
